Letter from Meilyn Tan Dear JES/JIS Alumni and Friends of JES/JIS, The recent Tsunami Disaster has affected the livelihood of many in the region. As the most devastated country, Indonesia continues to see the death toll increase well into the hundreds of thousands, not counting our brothers and sisters who are hospitalized, displaced, and unaccounted for. To see their suffering televised daily, if not hourly here in Jakarta, moves many of us to extend a helping hand. Since the Disaster first broke out, there has been an influx of contributions, be it food, water, clothing, medicine, or money. There are also countless volunteers in Aceh and North Sumatra providing technical assistance in various areas of expertise, including education, logistics, medicine, and infrastructure, despite continuing weather and health warnings. Much is already being done to provide immediate relief to the affected areas. To ensure relief is given beyond the immediate need, the Jakarta Chapter JIS Alumni Association is committed to provide ongoing and sustainable relief to victims of the Tsunami Disaster in Aceh and North Sumatra. We will work with JIS in its efforts to support children and education. Currently, the Jakarta Chapter is focused on raising funds to help mobilize the JIS relief effort or “JIS Cares”. To best support JIS Cares, the Jakarta Chapter will work closely with the JIS team or “JIS Task Force”. Members of the alumni effort include Jakarta Chapter Core Members Joe Warren (79), Doug Slusher (90), and Mindy Weimer (96), while Beth Owen (90), current Director of Alumni Relations and Development, will serve as the Jakarta Chapter’s liaison officer. The Jakarta Chapter has a key role in a worldwide network of JES/JIS Alunmi helping with relief efforts, which Arian Ardie (77) plans to assist in his capacity as Chairman of JIS Alumni Association, as we are the closest to areas most devastated by the Tsunami Disaster. The Jakarta Chapter has also agreed to support whatever relief activities TAA will engage in, since many of us maintain strong ties to the organization. Current TAA faculty advisors are Amit Khanna (86) and Lane Graciano (91), a JES/JIS Alumni couple who are also Jakarta Chapter Core Members. Whether it’s through JIS Cares or TAA, there is much that we can contribute as the community of JES/JIS Alumni closest to our brothers and sisters in Aceh and North Sumatra. As we continue with our activities for the year, we have pledged to tie in all Jakarta Chapter 2005 Events with fund raising activities for JIS Cares. This ensures our contribution and support are ongoing and long lasting. For more information on Jakarta Chapter Events, please, refer to our monthly announcements on www.jisalumni.com. And as emails continue to pour in from JES/JIS Alumni throughout the world, I realize that although many no longer live in Indonesia, Indonesia still lives in all of us. After all, Indonesia is where we grew up and went to school, where we made many lasting friendships and treasured memories, where we interacted and grew to appreciate Indonesian people, food, culture, and tradition, including that of Gotong Royong – the practice of mutual cooperation, working together, and helping one another. Just as Indonesians have made a difference in our lives, I urge all of us to work together to make a difference in their lives. I look forward to doing my best to coordinate and oversee the Jakarta Chapter JIS Alumni Association relief activities. On behalf of the Home Base Chapter, I extend our most sincere and heartfelt gratitude for your loving concern and kind participation. Sincerely, Meilyn Tan (95) Chair, Jakarta Chapter JIS Alumni Association |
