Letter from Meilyn Tan
Dear JIS Community Members,
I write to you to complement my first communication that was published in
parent newsletters and on our web site.
We established and convened our task force called “JIS Cares - JIS Peduli”.
The task force of 15 includes representatives from the many parts of the JIS
community, including faculty and staff members, administrators, students, PTA,
School Council and alumni. As a group we will meet regularly, receive and
deliberate on requests for help, and coordinate school based activities that
will focus on our relief efforts. The group will also decide on the forms,
direction and recipients of our aid. In our initial meeting the task force
identified its strengths. These include:
- the high profile position of JIS as an educational institution in the region and also internationally,
- a long history of JIS community support for children/orphans,
- an existing infrastructure for giving,
- an extensive network of community and alumni on which to draw (both domestically and internationally),
- a strong leverage of funds in our volunteer network,
- a long-term commitment and focus,
- a commitment to transparency and accountability.
Our task force recommends that our assistance be focused on children and the
restoration of educational facilities in the areas of North Sumatra., and that
our best immediate response is to seek donors and to initiate fund raising
activities.
Donors may submit their contributions in any of the following ways:
- Cash donations in boxes labeled “JIS Cares” placed next to the lead secretaries’ desks on each campus.
- Rupiah donations through a Panin Bank account: “JIS Peduli - JIS Cares” (Panin Bank, Pondok Indah Branch, Account #: 106.3.13577.7, account holder Steven Money).
- Cheque and credit card deposits by following the links on the JIS web site www.jisedu.org. (these donations are tax deductible).
- Donations (cash or cheques) via the JIS Business Office into a JIS safekeeping fund. Cash or cheques can be deposited, the latter to be made out to Jakarta International School with a note that the donation is for “JIS Cares”. The account number is SKF BO 35261.
In the next few weeks we anticipate that our community will initiate and connect
with activities that are not just fund raising. These might include writing personal
letters to the children in the Aceh region, a book and toy drive, and the making of
educational materials to be delivered to the emergency schools that are being
established by UNICEF and the Indonesian National Ministry of Education.
I will do my best to keep you informed of our “JIS Cares” activities as they evolve.
In anticipation of your continued help I offer my thanks.
Steven Money
Director of Admissions and Community Activities.
