Foundation Stone Campaign The earthquake and resulting tsunami that struck the Indonesian island of Sumatra on December 26, 2004 was a natural disaster of unprecedented proportion. It killed more than 100,000 people and has left more than 500,000 homeless in Indonesia. Many of the victims were children with more than 35,000 having lost one or both parents. Out of the tragedy has come an outpouring of help and concern for the victims. A massive international and national relief effort has been mounted. Thousands of volunteers from dozens of countries from around the world and Indonesia have been working tirelessly to aid the victims and help rebuild the devastated society of Aceh and northern Sumatra. The Foundation Stone Campaign seeks to recognize their efforts and the countless numbers of other people around the world who have shown compassion and generosity. The simple black stone is engraved with a line drawing of a traditional or “adat” house. It symbolizes the rebuilding effort, the laying of a new foundation, one stone at a time. Made in Indonesia, the Foundation Stone comes in a small black bag emblazoned with the same “adat” house logo and contains a note with the following message: ![]() Foundation Stone From the people of Indonesia, a small token of our immense gratitude for helping rebuild our foundations after 26 December 2004 This Foundation Stone shows the outline of a traditional or adat house, and symbolizes your efforts in rebuilding the foundations of Aceh and northern Sumatra. All net proceeds from this campaign will be channeled into helping the children affected by the quake and tsunami, and into reviving education in Aceh and northern parts of Sumatra. The campaign is being managed by ‘JIS Cares’, which is composed of Jakarta International School’s students, teachers, staff, parents and alumni.
